Socrates was sentenced to death for corrupting the youth and impiety. Impiety simply put is lack of proper respect. The two impious acts that Socrates was accused of were failing to acknowledge the gods the city acknowledges and for introducing new deities. Essentially Socrates was sentenced to death for being a philosopher and asking philosophical questions. In the book “How Socrates Died” we read several conversations between Socrates and his associates discussing his predicament. Socrates main topic of conversation is the soul’s immortality, Socrates uses his final days to prove to his associates the truth of the statement, Socrates states that “ for life and death are contraries, and never can co-exist; but whatever the soul is, there is life: so that it contains within itself that which is contrary to death, and consequently can never admit of death; therefore it is immortal. Socrates is able to convince Cebes , however Simmias still had doubts as to the soul’s immortality.
