THE LIFE OF PYTHAGORAS
Pythagoras was a Greek Mathematician and Philosopher. During his early years, he went to Egypt and Babylon to learn math, these two countries were considered the top two countries which were the most civilized. According to a story I heard before, Pythagoras saw a poor but diligent man, and he wanted to teach him geometry. He went up to the man and told him that if he could understand one principle in geometry, then he would get some coins. Of course the man tried his best to learn for coins. After a period of time, the man actually gained great interest in geometry and asked Pythagoras to teach him more. As consequence, he would now give Pythagoras money for the teaching. Not before long, Pythagoras got all the money he gave to the poor man in the first place back. Later, Pythagoras and his students created “The school of Pythagoras”. Pythagoras also allowed women to his lectures, which was quite rare in his days and he probably was the only one to do so. He believed that both men and women had the rights to learn. I think this is probably another reason besides math why he is still honored today. He was the pioneer to deliver the idea of equity and influenced many other scholars later on.
