Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy?
Understanding physics and general rules of the universe is of prime importance to philosophy because physics in the science that is closest to explaining fundamental questions in philosophy. Those fundamental questions are what is real? and how do we know it? (Quantum Weirdness, Lane). Philosophy's concern with reality gives physics a major role as a co-discipline to philosophy. The rules of physics, specially quantum physics and the rules of the universe translate into philosophical thinking in a difference sense. Since all things are made up of matter, including humans, and quantum physics aims are finding the fundamental laws of matter, then physics is also essentially trying to find the fundamental laws of human existence. Philosophy is also concerned with such questions, and therefore the two disciplines go hand in hand. Discoveries in physics, will determine the path for philosophy.
