1. Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
Socrates was sentenced to death by Melitus because he was encouraging the youth that there were all these different gods. Gods other than the ones the state recognized. The jurors said that he was “corrupting the youth” because of his teachings about the gods. Socrates admitted he speaks his mind/thoughts/opinions/beliefs. In “How Socrates Died” he mentions,
“I have a benevolent habit of pouring out myself to everybody.” Socrates was asked to give his own punishment and he included a fine of some money. Socrates was eventually sentenced to death and had to drink a cup of poison hemlock. He basically was his own killer. He drunk poison and it slowly but surely made him cold, numb, and stiff. It would soon reach his heart where he would die.
2. Why is there a conflict (for some) between science and religion? Be sure to support your answers with references to the required readings and films class forum.
There is a conflict between science and religion because science is based all on factual information and religion is based on personal beliefs. In science there is nothing but proof being thrown at you. Scientists don’t care about functions of the soul. Someone who leans more toward science will mention how everything they believe has evidence to back them up. As for someone who depends more on religion is relying just on faith and no evidence. In the book “Matter or Spirit” the author mentions, “the more I study the mystical, the more physical it becomes and the more I study the physical, the more mystical it turns out to be” shows how religion relies on our hopes and encourages one to continue to keep pushing through circumstances.
