According to the Oxford Dictionary, matter is defined as “Physical substance in general, as distinct from mind and spirit; (in physics) that which occupies space and possesses rest mass, especially as distinct from energy. In other words, basically everything is composed of matter, which is why the word it is derived from--”Mater”, meaning “mother”--is so fitting. Contrary to popular belief, matter is not just one thing; rather, as Professor Lane declares in The Great Mystery: Matter Vs Spirit, “It is rather a scaffolding project of many layers, each of which reveals a different aspect of what matter can do under differing circumstances.” (5). This is perhaps made most evident when one considers an environment like, say, a beach. For upon doing so, they will likely notice that matter is expressed in all different forms. For instance, a beach would likely consist of sand, or solid matter; water, or liquid matter; and air--gas matter.
