For many people there has always been a conflict between science and religion, it seems to me that for many the two cannot coexist. In those who believe this, the world is very black and white for them. As I was reading the book “The Great Mystery, Spirit vs. Matter I kept going back to my first introduction to this topic way back in 5th grade when we were discussing evolution and Darwin. In science class the teacher skimmed over the concept real quick (keep in mind I went to Catholic school), in our next period we had religion class where the teacher would read from the Old Testament explaining how the world was created. I look back now and think maybe it was a conspiracy so that we wouldn’t learn to question the dual concepts. While I was reading the assigned reading one phrase really stuck with me as to the essence of why we can have science and religion in our lives and believing in one does not negate the other. “Science cannot diminish the spiritual quest if that quest is concerned with truth and not merely dogmatic assertions taken at face value. However, spiritual paths must be open to varying interpretations and must (and this is the kicker that most paths tend to resist)” If only we all could keep our minds open and follow what this phrase is trying to convey.

I am very glad i went back and read this post. I was also born and raised Catholic. I can relate to your post because i had the same thoughts while i was reading “The Great Mystery, Spirit vs. Matter"! Much appreciation to you, because i skimmed through some parts of the reading and totally missed what you had quoted. I completely agree with your wish for everyone to keep more of an open mind toward this subject! I love how you went about with this essay question!(:
