Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
Socrates was sentenced to death after charges were pressed against him due to his opposing beliefs with the state. He didn’t believe in the Gods that the state recognized. He also got accused of “ruining” the Athenian youth with his teachings and ideas. Socrates however doesn’t stand with or against either of the charges that were pressed against him. He gets sentenced to death and is forced to drink a poisonous drink that slowly kills him. He shows indifference upon taking the drink but his followers break down. (How Socrates Died)
Socrates tries to explain himself by saying that he was confused by the idea of a God and was seeking for advice rather than trying to teach. (#7, Apology of Socrates)
The jury found him guilty anyways and sentenced him to death.
Why is there a conflict between science and religion?
Both science and religion have different definitions of the word “matter”. What everything comes down to in science is different than what everything comes down to in religion. Although they both agree on certain ideas (such as that of atoms), the creation of these come from different perspectives. Eventually the two come to a stop. You can break down both science and religion into the smallest of bits but you will eventually come to a stop where you can no longer break them down anymore and where the conflict arises. (pg.1-9; The Great Mystery, Matter Vs. Spirit). A huge reason why religion and science conflict is because religion gets the idea of life and matter down to it’s core (which in most religions, would be a God (or Gods). Science however, can only break down matter so much so where eventually we don’t have any more answers. “The limits of our skull are the limits of our understanding.” (The Great Mystery, Matter Vs. Spirit)
