The word matter was derived from the word “mother”. It is the physical substance in general, as distinct from mind and spirit; that which occupies space and possesses rest mass, especially as distinct from energy. Objects that take up space and have mass are called matter. Everything around us is made of matter, even us. Everything is made up of cells, molecules, and atoms. All matter is the same and all matter is made up of atoms. Matter can be made up of different kinds of atoms. We use our senses which are known as physical properties and that is how we determine what something is. We know what an apple is because of its color, shape, density, volume and mass. Those would be some of the physical properties. Not only do we have matter all over, but matter is also constantly changing. An example of matter always changing is when the ice in your drink starts to melt. People question about where the ice goes when it melts or what does it become? This is how matter remains to be a mystery.
