Week 5 Questions
1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
I believe artificial intelligence will have pros and cons in the future. Some pros of artificial intelligence are that they do not require lunch or bathroom breaks, this enables them to work 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. Also they are cost efficient, other than building the machines they do not have to pay them individually for their work, which will save money in the long run. Some cons of artificial intelligence is that there will be lots of lost jobs which will increase unemployment. There is also no compassion or sympathy, if there are eventually robots that become doctors or nurses, they will not be genuine. Also, artificial intelligence runs off of programs written by humans, therefore if something comes up that is new or requires deep thought, they will not be able to handle the situation because it is not written in their program. Yes I believe their will be problems, but they also will be very useful. As long as we have humans looking over the actions of our artificial intelligence they could be useful tools.
2. How has technology impacted your life?
Technology has heavily impacted my life and all the lives around me as well. Anyone who has used a phone, wether it be a land line or cell phone, has been affected by technology. Since I was a child we have advanced so much in technology. Simple phones turned into computers, large televisions turned into flatscreen, and now we have robots building cars. All of these things have impacted my life, without a smartphone I would be left stumped throughout the day, not being able to look up answers or questions that I have. With technology increasing so fast is will have even a larger impact on humans in the future. Like Ray Kurzweil says in his video, since he was an undergraduate there has been, “A billion fold increase in price performance in computing since I was an undergraduate”. This shows how important technology is to us, and how advanced it is becoming.
