Socrates was sentenced to death by forced suicide with hemlock. He was accused by Melitus of corrupting youth, and not believing in the gods. Socrates insists that he true reason he has been accused by Melitus is that he exposed those who were ignorant but believed they were wise, and didn't even truly understand the words that they said. He believed that this angered them into falsely accusing him out of what could be jealousy. He also says that although he doesn't believe in the same gods, he acknowledges the by lowrate"> existence of them, and that should prove Melitus wrong.
