1. Why was Socrates sentenced to death??
Much like those who were condemn during the persecution of witches in colonies, Socrates died for believing in something contradictory in the public eye. However unlike the witch trials, the philosopher was not given the option of mercy. in the first part of the book the philosopher never clearly denies his charges. Socrates is being accused of two things the first in not worshiping the accepted gods of Athens, the second charge was the corruption of Athenian youth. According to the text he was never in trouble with the law until the trial and was unaware of the language and politics of a court therefore failed to defend himself clearly. As a result of his failure to clearly state his case he was sentenced to death by hemlock, which from reading the text, may be the equivalent to the lethal injection and a more humane form of death. Given the opportunity to escape Plato states that Socrates refused to escape not fearing death because he did have a belief in the gods and that Athenian law was to be held followed above everything.
2. Why is there a conflict science and religion??
Frankly this is the easier of the two essays to answer because living in 2015 there is conflict in of science and religion in almost everything. Regarding who should be allowed to marry, the age of the earth even the time of the dinosaurs is debated. According to some (not all) religious folk, the earth is a mere couple thousand years old however science tell us that the Earth is in fact 4.6 billions of years old, that is found in the most basic study of geology. Some people believe that God, took a literal seven days to create the earth and humanity even though science, the rock record and biology plainly inform us that humans rightfully so were not around during the primordial era. Based on Plato's cave theory it seems as though there is a conflict based on the deceptive nature of awareness, in this case those who have a conflict with science or religion the "world of shadows conceals man's truth creating a false idea of ideas and truth. Most cannot accept the idea of being reduced to just the body, we cannot accept our own mortality and insignificance.

What is matter???
Depending on who you are asking matter could be anything according to an early philosopher, matter was only one thing and that thing was water and everything was water. According to Hume matter is a claim determined to be true or false through experiences. According to the video "What is matter?" the word matter is derived from the word mother. Matter is the source of everything the particle that holds us and everything together.
