Week 8
1. Why is Faqir Chand’s experience important in understanding the projective nature of religious visions and miracles?
A: We learn about Faqir Chand’s experience in the film “Faqir Chand: Inner Visions and Running Trains”, it describes his vision and tells us what happened to Faqir when he was close to his death. In the video Faqir also explains why visions are so important and he also gives us some examples. Faqir vision helped to save his life and many lives of others during war, when he came back he was praised. When he came back, he knew there was something special; he started to study more about it. From my compression of the video, these visions would come at a time when someone is dead. Faqir found out that visions could vary from subject to subject. Faqir’s experience is very important to this subject and the understanding of it. This is because when one wants to learn a topic in depth, one would have to read or experience it to master the subject. From his experiences philosophers and anyone else can use them to study the topic in depth.
2. What is meant by the phrase, "philosophy done well is science; philosophy done poorly remains philosophy."
A: This is the first time that I have heard this phrase, but after 8 weeks of studying and reading philosophy, it does make sense. When one goes back to the definition of philosophy, one would get the meaning thinking, ideas, and though. Philosophy that is not done well is only facts and ideas being presented to one another. Not only that but when philosophy is not done well that means that it is not being supported or backed by any facts, which leads us to theories. When philosophy is done well it means multiple stuff. One is that it is most likely being backed by facts that are scientific. In most of the book that was required to be read one can notice with every proposal of a though there are many facts behind it to prove it. One book that shows us this is “Digital Philosophy”. Another point that makes "philosophy done well is science”, is that most philosophers do work regarding scientific matters, so when one proves something it counts a science too. This is also why we see many great philosophers also master another subject like astronomy, mathematics, and more subjects that surround science.
