Week 7: Question 1: Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
No, I do not believe artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future. Unlike the movies, “it’s not some alien invasion of intelligent machines coming from mars to invade us. It’s coming from within our civilization and the whole point is to extend our reach” (Ray Kurzweil: The Coming Singularity, Youtube). As Kurzweil stated, the idea is better civilization with the help of technology. Presently, we are able to access multitude of sources and information immediately with the use of our cellular devices; therefore, when humans produce artificial intelligence, humans will have more access to information we do not yet fully understand, such as the brain, feelings, and the human body. Many argued there are possibilities of bioterrorists who “reprograms a biological virus to be more deadly”, however, Kurzweil argued “we actually have the scientific tools to defend ourselves. Just like how we defend ourselves from software virus”. Although there are possibilities that artificial intelligence will be a danger in the future, it should not mean scientist should stop achieving artificial intelligence because if we had stop advancing ourselves due to fear, then we would not have the technology, transportation, knowledge, and capabilities we have today.
Week 7 Question 2: How has technology impacted your life? Be sure to support your answers with references to the required readings and films?
I heavily rely on technology to help communicate with my families, learn new information, make me procrastinate, and job. As the text stated, Digital Philosophy, stated, I am one of those people that “won't leave home without [my smartphone] and if do somehow forget [my] intelligent devices will invariably turn [my] cars around to go secure it” (Digital Philosophy, 5). My smartphone is my access to all the information and connection and if I forget something I look it up or call someone who can tell me; otherwise, I feel completely useless and vulnerable without it. As soon as I get home, depending on the circumstances, I am either on my computer or my Xbox; however, technology has helped me become a knowledgeable person because technology gave me access to multitudes of information in a second. Because of technology, I aspire to be an engineer and rely on the assistance of technology to research and design my ideas. I believe technology has impacted my life, but for the better.
