1. Why is Faqir Chand's experiences important in understanding the protective nature of religious visions and miracles?
Faqir Chand, an Indian master, practiced Shabd Yoga. He was the first guru, who talked about some believer's subjective projection of a sacred form of guru. Faqir Chand came to realize the secret behind religious visions during a military battle in Iraq in 1919. Faqir Chand’s comrades told him that they saw his imagery, and this helped them in the battle. Faqir Chand was surprised by this because he didn’t know that. Later, Faqir Chand concluded that it was their own projections of their mind. He had very little tolerance for religious practices leading to exploitation of poor, innocent and believing people. Faqir Chand disassociated himself from all such miracles saying it had happened for the faith of believers and not him ( Wikipedia). He was able to pull through in his time of fear that showed that religion vision and miracles do happen sometimes. The book "The Unknowing Saga: The Life and Work of Faqir Chand" showcase his life and what happened in it that makes him remembered to this day. Faqir Chand’s disciples told him that his visions appeared and helped them solve problems. Faqir Chand later stated that this is just their mental creations, or illusion. I agree with what Faqir Chand said. I believe it can be explained scientifically. In the video "Inner Visions and Running Trains", he said that when some people have a near death experience they might see Jesus at the end of long dark tunnel with light at the end but some other people who have experienced a near death experience say nothing happened. Faqir Chand was believed that the inner visions he had of Krishna, and his human guru, Maharishi Shiv Brat Lal were real. After Chand was told by his disciples that his visions appeared in their mind, which he didn’t have any conscious knowledge. Thus, Faqir Chand began to doubt, and he stated that the inner visions are just the projections of their mind. Overall, skepticism improves our understanding in different aspects of our life, and makes our life better. We can have new knowledge, and reasonable explanations through skepticism, not just something cannot be tested, or proved.
2. What is meant by the phrase, "philosophy done well is science; philosophy done poorly remains philosophy."
The phrase, "philosophy done well is science; philosophy done poorly remains philosophy" means that science is the target that philosopher want to reach, also it is the back up as the evidence to prof their claims. Science can help us explain mysticism, which gives us better explanation about why it happens. “The history of science is in many ways the elimination of formerly believed gods.” This quotation appears at the end of the reading. Science tries to replace every idea that is connecting with Gods, which the divine existence cannot be proved. This is a vast project. In all fields you really should be using science or research in your findings so people know that you are telling the truth and not lying about your findings. If you don't use science to support your claims then who knows if you are telling the truth? No one will know, they will all just believe it. That is why you must supply science when you are researching philosophy. I trust science because think science is more logical than religion, so do other people.
