Week 5&6
1. Explain the virtual simulation theory of consciousness.
A: Neural Surfer explains virtual simulation theory of consciousness in the YouTube video “Brain Burn”. The idea is that, what we see is actually not true and just an illusion in our minds. In other words the brain shows the person other images, which is though to be best for our survival. In the video, it explains how our brain does the best for us, which leads to our survival. This helps humans by giving them the best results in life without having a negative effect on the body. This particular theory can be explained by a few words, which is how our brain thinks to get the best outcome out of everything possible. In the book the “Universe App” by Lane a fantastic statement describes consciousness as “consciousness is a fantastic virtual simulator and because of its inclusivity and insular engineering it has an inherent tendency to believe its own machination…”(page 75).
2. How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our genetic survival?
A: The brain is the most important organism in our body, which makes it a very interesting but at the same time it is a very complex organism. Without the brain, human beings would not be able to survive without it as it does most if not all of the work to keep us alive. An example of when the brain tricks us is when really hot water is poured on the hand, we feel it right away but if it were cold then we would not feel it right away. In the book “Cerebral mirage”, Lane describes how the brain tricks us by saying “The brain tricks us into believing something to be real when its not, provided that such trickery provides with a survival advantage”. We always see in movies and cartoons that when a person is stranded in a dessert with no water, the brain tricks the eye into seeing an oasis. This is true as it is tricking the person so that he would strive to reach water and survive.
