Week 7
Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
I do think that artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future. If artificially intelligent robots will be like humans, we can expect some level of social Darwinism to occur amongst the artificially intelligent robots. As they will be able to grow intelligent infinitely, they will exceed the intelligence of humans, making us “less” than them. It is concerning that they could be more intelligent and therefore more powerful than humans. Moreover, as stated in the YouTube video “Zombie Consciousness,” someday the successful application of the Turing Test may be able to blur the line between human intelligence and artificial intelligence. So we humans may also stand to lose our unique identity. We are a species that wants to believe that we are special and full of a potential that is unique and meaningful in it’s exclusivity. I feel that the disillusionment that will occur from diminishing our distinctive existence and brain could potentially squelch what has been our motivator for seeking to know where we came from and what our ultimate potential may be. This lack of motivation that could arise from artificial intelligence may halt the progression of humans.
How has technology impacted your life? Be sure to support your answers with references to the required readings and films.
In the film Alan Turing, I learned in his brief biography that The Bombe machine he was instrumental in helping create is a major reason for Germany not winning the second World War. His contribution to technology in the 40s led to a monumental moment in human history. Additionally, the Turing machine is the foundation for all computational devices that are in existence. Technology has the power to bridge the gap between countries and cultures. For me, the ability to look at photographs from all over the world and learn about photographers and photography techniques from simply logging onto the internet is huge as I am a lover of photography and being able to learn from other artist plays a huge role in how I grow as an artists myself. Additionally, I’ve been an diabetic since I was a child. Being able to test my blood sugar with a handheld device that I can keep on my person has been invaluable to my quality of life. Finally, technology has provided an opportunity for me to get an education while working, through the use of the internet. The list could go on and on about the positive effects of technology on my life. To put it simply, technology has impacted my life positively.
