Describe the virtual simulation theory of consciousness.
The virtual simulation theory of consciousness explains that what we see is not the perception of something real, but an illusion of our mind. The film “Brain Burn” describes consciousness as dissociation, “Every deep though and question we own is the result of the confusion of a neuron system, when confronted with it owns dissociation.” it also recalls imagination daydreaming. Consciousness is what allow us to adapt to our environment because our mind is able to create a simulation of what we want to believe is real. For example as kids our parents told us and make us believe, that we had to behave good because during Christmas times Santa Claus won’t bring us gift, if we were not good kids through out the year. Our mind created an illusion were we perceived Santa Claus as real individual, we even had imagination daydreaming about the moment when we were going to be able meet “Santa Claus.” Our mind creates and illusion, which does not allow us to perceive the reality, and it creates a confusion when kids are told that Santa Claus is not real because the mind created this perfect illusion, that when kids are finally told it is hard for them to realized that it was only an illusion, and not the perception of something real.
How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our genetic survival.
With the argument that our mind is a virtual simulation, I will argue that some of the things that we perceive as real they may be only an illusion of our brain. This goes back to one of the lectures form Doctor Lane, when he explained that we are not design to understand the universe because our brain does not have that ability. There is a lot of information that the brain is simply not prepared for. For instance, the previous example demonstrates that little kids are too small, and their brain is not develop enough to understand that Santa Claus is not real. However, this is important for their development and critical thinking as adults because it shows the power of the brain, complexity, and how important is for genetic survival.
