WEEK 1 AND WEEK 2 QUESTION 2: WHY IS THERE A CONFLICT (FOR SOME) BETWEEN SCIENCE AND RELIGION?
For some, there is conflict between believing in science and religion because of the “term matter is mostly a linguistic confusion and as such has blinded us from the radical mystery to which it consistently points us towards” (The Great Mystery, page 13). The outdated definition, physical substance, confuses and gives people “a sense of entrapment” (Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, Youtube) in their own existence. Religion gives some people a feeling of transcending of out of the materialistic human body and into a spiritual realm. It is misconceived that matter is just substance, it is a complex system and recipe that configure in specific patterns to form all physical forms from rocks to “millions of different species trying their best to adapt to a whole ecosystem” (What is Matter? The Magic of Physics, Youtube). Some find it hard to put down their religions teaching to understand their surroundings and understand that we are not just “physical substance’ but a complication of science and chemistry in the works since the big bang.

I agree with you some people who are religious choose to not seek out the truth told in science with the fear of their own beliefs being false. A problem that could help both sides is to update the definition of matter to a more current scientific definition based off of findings and facts.
