WEEK 1 AND WEEK 2 QUESTION 1: WHY WAS SOCRATES SENTENCED TO DEATH?
Socrates was sentenced to death because he was found guilty of “A very serious charge [..] a young man […] says he knows how the youth are corrupted and who are their corruptors. Accuse [Socrates] of corrupting his young friends… [the young man] says that [Socrates is] a poet or maker of gods, and that [he] invent new gods and deny the existence of old ones; this is the ground of his indictment.” (How Socrates Died, page 5-6). Socrates is accused with the crime of “corrupting the youth” by spreading the idea of questioning and rationalizing; for instance, Socrates helps Euthyphro question and rationalize “whether there may not be justice where is not pity; for justice is the more extended notion of which piety is only a part” (How Socrates Died, page 20). Socrates helped spread the “Emergence of Rationality” (Neuralsurfer, Youtube) in Athens where citizens began to question and rationalize their surroundings. Socrates insinuated the idea of questioning Athen’s gods and angering those of rule; therefore, Socrates was found guilty of his crime and sentenced to death.
