Socrates was sentenced to death because of his wisdom and just. His exact charge was that “Socrates acts unjustly in corrupting the youth, and in not believing in those gods in whom the city believes, but in other strange divinities.” In fact, Socrates is wiser because he does not pretend to know something when he actually knows nothing. The less wise one, according to Socrates, fancies to know something when he actually knows nothing. Perhaps Socrates becomes odious to many people because he constantly travels and converses with them, who Socrates thinks and wishes are supposedly wiser than him, but always ends up growing hatred towards Socrates because through the conversation, he reveals to them the fact that they are not as wise as they thought and that they indeed know nothing. Socrates also made a number of young people to follow him his deed but was accused of corrupting the youth because “there is one Socrates.” I think that the sentence of Socrates to death reflects that people then were somehow narrow-minded and pretentious, especially those who were in charge. They did not welcome new ideas or even truth if they threatened the reputation or validity of the regime. Therefore, Socrates, who always follows the truth, justice and the lead of God, became the sacrifice of the era.

Hi Zheng Zhao,
Overall, I thought your post had good points. I too agree that Socrates was too smart because he pretended he was not breaking any of the laws and that he knew better than to not break any of them. He does claim that he does not know anything when in fact he knows more than anyone else. His wisdom got the best of him and it seemed like he used it to his advantage when he started to have younger people follow his actions.

Zheng,
You stated that people in Socrates time "reflects that people then were somehow narrow-minded and pretentious". The reason's why Socrates was executed was the same reason Jesus was executed hundreds of year later, the reason Martin Luther King was assasinated over 50 years ago and the reason Nelson Mandela was inprisoned in our lifetime. Narrow-minded and pretentiousness existed back then and still does now. It is nothing exclusive to Greek times. Furthermore, it was an issue of power that killed Socrates above all not narrow-mindedness and pretentious leaders. Leaders just wanted to make sure no one questioned their power and Socrates was a threat, another issue that we will deal with today.
