One famous picture which was drawn by a French Artist Jacques-Louis David, show the scene of Socrates is about to drink the poison during the term that Socrates was sentenced to death. We know that his last debate was Life and death are things which don’t exist in the same time. At his time, Socrates thought most Athens were actually not as bright as they think they are, he claims that he is only a little bit smarter since he knows that he knows nothing. This caused the judges to put a crime on him and sentenced him to death. According to Plato’s records, after Socrates was given capital punishment for disrespecting the gods in Athens. He had the chance to run away since his students bribed the jail guard, however, Socrates said he was not going to do that. Again, in the picture, there is this tile under his bed, which I think is probably a clue to how he was going to escape. The reason he didn’t do so is because he realizes that he has to follow the law of this city state and accept what the jury said, or he would be breaching the contract and this was not what he wanted. I think Socrates showed the best respect to law at his time, if nobody obeyed the law, then how can we be civilized today?
